Chinese film star gives UNNC students a rave review

Glamorous Chinese film star Yao Chen gave students at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) a rave review on her microblog following a recent shoot at the park-like campus in the city of Ningbo in Zhejiang province.

Yao has the largest number of microblog fans in China, with a staggering 14m followers linked to her Sina Weibo account. Sina Weibo is China’s equivalent of Twitter.

The actress and her co-star Wang Luodan were on campus in late October for the filming of Chen Kaige’s movie called “Search”, a drama which has the hazards of rumour-mongering in cyberspace as its central theme.

Yao said on her blog: “I was at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China for a shoot. The enthusiastic students quickly circled the site. They were excellent when filming began; hundreds of students immediately went silent. Filming went smoothly thanks to the students.”

The message was re-tweeted about 4,000 times and more than 2,500 people commented about Yao’s impressions of UNNC students.

Said Chen of the filming location, on the lawn in front of the iconic administration building which has a distinct Nottingham clock tower:

“The campus is very beautiful. The students at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China are great. They were very cooperative.”

One student among the dozens who gathered around the film crew’s cordon said Yao, in real life, looks exactly as she does on television. Another was surprised that Wang looked like “a sweet, neighbourhood girl” rather than an intimidating, larger-than-life beauty.

After Yao mentioned The University of Nottingham Ningbo China, the University’s own Sina Weibo| account’s number of fans jumped by about 10 per cent to 3,700, while its new Renren site added about 300 friends.
