The death has been announced of Sir Peter Mansfield, the MRI pioneer and one of the University of Nottingham’s most eminent scientists.
Born in London, Peter Mansfield joined the University in 1964 as a physics lecturer. He went on to spend the whole of his academic career at Nottingham, retiring in 1994.
Together with his research partner - the late American scientist Paul Lauterber - Sir Peter will forever be remembered for his work on the Magnetic Image Resonance (MRI) body scanner, for which the pair were jointly award the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 2003.
