MA Contemporary Chinese Studies
Course outline
This new degree is an exciting and unique opportunity for you to be part of a taught Masters programme which develops your knowledge and understanding of a rapidly transforming contemporary China. Designed for postgraduate students with little or no previous knowledge of China, this MA provides you with alternative pathways for applying a range of disciplinary perspectives to the study of Chinese business and society, politics and economics, sustainable development and the environment, media and popular culture, visual and performing arts, or modern Chinese history. There is an excellent opportunity to study Mandarin language to a high standard of competence and to use what you have learned in a Chinese language and cultural setting.
You will have a chance to participate in an extended interdisciplinary field school, including visits to key cities and into the Chinese countryside, which will enrich your cultural and linguistic experience and allow you to explore a range of themes and issues relevant for understanding contemporary China. The degree prepares you for the growing demands of employers in various sectors for expertise on China as well as the opportunity to pursue further study for a PhD in Chinese studies.

* Students may be interviewed to determine the appropriate level of Mandarin modules. Students who already possess advanced Mandarin language skills will be required to take translation and interpretation modules appropriate to their level or, by agreement with the Course Director, students may be permitted to take other modules.
** There will be an additional fee for the field school (not exceeding 6,000 RMB) which includes approximately 1 week in Shanghai and 1 week in Beijing.
