The UNNC Experience – A taste of Ningbo  

A summer programme designed for international or domestic high school students to experience  British style teaching at UNNC and learn about subjects you might be interested in studying at university.

The programme will give you an introduction to a range of courses we offer and a taste of student life in Ningbo


International High School Summer Programme



Academic classes

Below is an outline of the classes you will participate in during the summer school. You will take all classes but you don’t need prior knowledge of the subjects – the programmes aim to give you a taster and help you choose what subject you might want to study at university or beyond. The interactive classes are taught by experienced academics and you will have the chance to use our state-of-the-art research facilities.

Faculty of Science and Engineering

Session 1: Bridge competition
In this competition students will build a bridge with paper and tape. The bridge is then tested for its strength to decide the winner. 

Session 2: Building a simple Robot
Students will be provided simple UNNC self-made robot kits together with the electronics to control the robots. They will assemble and test the robots after.

Faculty of Business

Session 1: Running an international business
Would you like to be the CEO of an international company today? Why not join us for a session where you will "design" the structure of a company? You will be in charge of a large international company that makes (1) commercial aircraft, (2) railway trains, and (3) snowmobiles. As CEO who have all the decision-making power, how will you structure the company's activities around the world?

Session 2: Getting involved in the stock market What is stock trading?
Have you ever wondered what stock traders actually do? You can now find more about how financial markets function and learn about the stock trading process in this session at Nottingham University Business School China. We will show you how a trading room works and give you real-life exposure to the discipline of investment analysis to study and understand worldwide financial markets.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Session 1:  From Ancient Civilization to Global Superpower - Understanding the Rise of China
This session provides an overview of the history, culture and society of this fascinating and complex nation in order to explore China's astonishing rise, the scale of which is perhaps unprecedented in human history.

Session 2: Digital Games and Communication
Did you ever miss a class because you could not stop playing video games? This session looks at the ways in which digital games change our patterns of communication on- and offline, and engages students to reflect on their behavioral and communication patterns when playing digital games.


Social and cultural programme

As well as giving you a taste of the most up-to-date teaching and research, the summer programme offers activities which will give you the chance to explore the local area, learn some basic Chinese and interact with Chinese high school students.

Programme costs

The six-day programme will cost RMB 3,000. An early bird discount of 10% will be given if the full fee is paid by 1 May 2017.

The cost includes:

  • Free airport pick-up service at Ningbo Lishe Airport
  • All tuition and classroom support costs
  • Accommodation on campus for the duration of the programme
  • Cultural and social programme
  • Food during the trip which is organised by the University

The cost does not include:

  • Return ticket to China
  • Food (which is very reasonably priced in China)
  • Insurance (students coming from abroad need to sort out their own overseas travel insurance before they leave their home country)

Arrive: Sunday 9 July 2017

Depart: Saturday 15 July 2017

Free airport pickup service will be available at Ningbo Airport on Sunday 9 July if you inform us of your travel arrangement in advance.


Entry requirements

While no formal academic requirements are necessary, we welcome high school students at age 16 or above with good English language proficiency of at least IELTS 5.5. Other English language certificate will be considered. You can either be a student from China or from an international school abroad.
