BA (Hons) English Language and Literature (2+2)
This degree closely follows the BA English Language and Applied Linguistics in its Preliminary and Qualifying Year: it provides a thorough programme of study to the highest standards of English communicational and critical skills, with a particular emphasis on literature in the English language, and the cultural patterns associated with these texts. The programme is based on the successful degree course which has been established in Nottingham for 125 years.
In addition to standard theories of language, this degree provides students with a sophisticated understanding of how language is used in context and influenced by purpose, setting and audience. It focuses especially on an understanding of written culture through literature produced in English. It provides a thorough understanding of the nature and uses of English in context, and aims to equip students with communicative and critical skills.
The first two years are shared with the sister degree, BA in English Language and Applied Linguistics.
Year One (Preliminary Year - Ningbo)
The preliminary year comprises a special programme of English for Academic Purposes designed by the Centre for English Language Education (CELE)| staff at the University of Nottingham. This is carefully integrated with the content programmes offered by the Division so as to prepare students fully for years 2-4 of the degree.
Year Two (Qualifying Year - Ningbo)
Students are introduced to standard theories of language and explore various contexts of language in use. They are also introduced to modern literature and develop advanced language skills.
