Biography

Expertise Summary

Professor Jo Darkwa is a professor of Energy Storage Technologies at the University of Nottingham UK and also the Director of the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (CSET) in UNNC. He was a professor of Sustainable Energy Systems at the Nottingham Trent University UK before joining Nottingham University in 2007. He is one of the leading experts in applied energy and low carbon technologies with considerable years of research, teaching and industrial experience. Prof Darkwa has published widely and also undertaken number of major research/consultancy contracts for the UK Government, EU, China and the private sectors. He has organised a number of International Conferences/Symposia and given keynote addresses in energy related topics. He has chaired several sessions at the International Energy Conversion Engineering Conferences (IECEC 2002-2013), International Symposium on Low Carbon Buildings (2010-2012)  and at the Annexe 10, Advanced Thermal Energy Storage in Phase Change Materials, International Energy Agency (IEA)- (2001-2005). He was appointed in 2005 as a member of the European Union Energy Management Expert Advisory group for six Western Balkan Countries to organise number of seminars and workshops for officials from those countries. He has been a consultant/advisor to organisations such Tarmac plc. (Thermodeck), London Underground, CIBA Ltd, United States Gypsum Company and Certain Teed Corporation, USA in energy storage and cooling/heating related research projects. In 2004, he was honoured by the Terrestrial Energy Systems Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) as a Distinguished International Energy Research Coordinator in recognition of his contribution towards IECEC activities and in 2007 received another prestigious award for Technical Excellence in energy conversion engineering systems from the AIAA. He recently led a team of researchers to develop a novel composite phase change material for energy storage application in the built environment.
