BEng (Hons) Product Design and Manufacture (2+2/4+0)
Course Outline
This course equips you for a career in product design, industrial design or in the product development sector, and is aligned to the way the design process is conducted in industry today. You will develop your creativity, backed by a thorough understanding of engineering issues, to ensure that products can be manufactured within the constraints of time, cost and quality.
Course Structure
We offer two options for this degree:
Option 1: two years’ study in Ningbo, following by two years’ study on a fully integrated programme in Nottingham.
Option 2: four years’ study in Ningbo, with one-year “study abroad” possibilities.
Year One (Preliminary Year-Ningbo)
In this foundation year, the focus is on a special programme and English for academic purposes. Designed by highly-experienced staff at the Univsity’s Centre for English Language Education, this programme prepares students fully for their degree courses. Common modules of study across all degrees include:
-
written and oral communication and study skills
-
sciences such as physics and chemistry maths for engineering and computer science
-
engineering communication and IT skills. This module will have a hands-on approach to ensure competency in: Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Additionally, the module involves the use of a software environment (eg MATLAB) to help solve engineering and mathematical problems related concepts and methods studied during the year while introducing programming technical material in drawing, schematic and graphical format.
Students work in small groups to develop their academic English language skills.
Year Two (Qualifying Year-Ningbo)
The first year shares many modules with the Division's other engineering degrees and will therefore give you a broad foundation in engineering science and design, manufacturing processes, material selection and behaviour, mathematics and business studies.
Year Three (Part I-Nottingham or Ningbo)
You will develop further design skills and commercial awareness in year two. There are several design projects throughout the year, complemented by modules in the areas of design techniques, manufacturing, ergonomics and business.
Year Four ( Part II- Nottingham or Ningbo)
You continue to develop design skills through project work and the modules studied become more in-depth. This includes a major design project undertaken in the final semester along with a dissertation. By the end of the course, you will have developed skills in product design, materials, and manufacture that will enable you to undertake creative professional practice in the fields of product design or product development.
Project Work
The final semester of the BEng Degree is the Major Project. This is the opportunity for you to demonstrate all the skills and knowledge that are learnt during the course.
Throughout the course, projects and coursework enable students to build an impressive portfolio of work to show potential employers. http://www.designatnottingham.com/|
