MRes in Sustainable Energy and Building Technologies

 

 

Course outline

This is a 1-year full-time research programme entirely based in Ningbo, China. The main aim of the programme is to provide students with a sound and coherent educational experience which develops critical intellectual faculties by application to the methods and practices involved in energy, architecture and environmental issues. Competitive advantage may also be gained by the graduates through maintaining the high levels of environmental conscientiousness which the programme advocates. The proposed programme is also intended to enhance the appeal of our educational activities to graduates and practitioners from various academic and professional backgrounds. The specific objectives are as follows:

  • to encourage integration between the separate disciplinary areas
  • to encourage innovation and design creativity within a sound operational context
  • to develop the students transferable skills in research methods at postgraduate level
  • to facilitate an in-depth investigation of a relevant topic through independent research

 

Course structure

Part I: Compulsory Modules (Total 20 credits)

These credits can be accumulated from courses offered from within the Research Training Programme run by the Graduate School or other units offering generic training within the University, or from within any other generic training courses run within individual Schools. The generic courses will be selected in consultation with the supervisor(s) and should be cognate with the student's research topic. The selection of these modules is at the discretion of the student's School. Guidance on the appropriateness of the content of modules is available from the Graduate School and Supervisors. 

 

Part II: Dissertation  (Total 160 credits)       

Full year research in a sub area of the course in a team environment, followed by submission of a dissertation to assessed by two examiners. The supervision team include usually two supervisors who will advise the research topic and programme.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have completed a Bachelors degree at 2:1 level or above (or international equivalent) in an appropriate subject. Evidence of relevant personal, professional and educational experience may be taken into consideration.

Students whose first language is not English or entry qualification was not obtained in the English medium are required to provide satisfactory evidence of their proficiency in English. Requirements for admission to the MRes programme can be: 

One-Year Masters 

Minimum English Language Requirement

  • IELTS 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in individual elements
  • TOEFL (paper based) 573 + TWE no less than 4.5 or
  • TOEFL (computer based) 230 + TWE no less than 4.5
  • TOEFL (IBT) 88 (no less than 19 in any element)

You will need to include the following documents together with your application form: a research proposal; degree certificates and official transcripts showing marks; two references in signed and sealed envelopes; IELTS or TOEFL test score; a copy of ID/ passport; four passport sized colour photographs. If there are original copies and photocopies of certificates for awards, works and essays, they may also be submitted.
