Welcome to the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (CSET)
The Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (CSET) was officially opened in September 2008 as the phase one of the Ko Lee Institute of Sustainable Development.
The CSET Building which is the first zero carbon building in China, provides laboratory, offices and seminar accommodation facilities. It has been designed to serve as an exemplar building, demonstrating state-of-the-art techniques for environmentally responsible and sustainable construction. The building provides 100 percent of its energy usage for lighting, power, heating and cooling from sources such as PV panels, solar absorption air conditioning system, geothermal heat pumps and wind turbine. It also minimises its environmental impact by using locally available materials with low embodied energy, storing rainwater and re-using grey water, and has developed its own ecology and biodiversity within the site.
The focus of research for the Centre is new and renewable energy systems and components for both domestic (housing) and non-domestic (commercial and public) buildings. The facilities in the laboratory include a climate chamber, thermal testing lab for materials and components, laser particle analyser, low carbon construction material development systems, façade testing facility, daylight and solar modelling lab, wind tunnel facility and a weather station.
The overall mission of the Centre is to provide solutions to problems arising from sustainability issues relating to the environment, engineering and technology and thus supports continuing endeavours to improve the ecology. The Centre also runs postgraduate courses and carries out consultancy, training programme for industries and public awareness activities.
