Contemporary Chinese Studies
The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies (SCCS) is a vibrant and innovative centre for the study of today’s China and its connections to the world.
China’s astonishing rise, the scale of which is perhaps unprecedented in human history, means it has never been more important for the world to know China and for China to explain itself to the outside world.
We are committed to cutting-edge research and teaching with a focus on Chinese business, economy, geography, media, culture, history, language, law, politics, science, technology, innovation and the environment.
Graduates from the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies are ideally placed to pursue careers across employment areas that require an in-depth knowledge of contemporary China.
The MA in Contemporary Chinese Studies perfectly met my needs and being located at Ningbo adds to the richness of the experience, providing an ideal environment to learn, understand and reflect on how to employ my new found knowledge in the future.

My recent research focuses on the reform of China’s science and technology system, including an examination of its problems at the macro, meso, and micro levels, a follow-up study of the progress of the reform, and an analysis of the funding for research and development activities. The research has been published in a series of papers in Science (in 2013, 2014 and 2017). I always integrate my research into the postgraduate module, Globalization and Innovation in China.
