MSc International Business

The degree provides a full-time course for those seeking positions in international business. The programme aims to develop knowledge and skills in fundamental management disciplines, while also including specialist modules in various areas of international business.

Programme participants can also use the dissertation component to concentrate in-depth on an international topic according to individual interests and career requirements.

This is a 'conversion' masters programme for students without a basic degree in business/management and related areas.

With the global economy increasingly influencing the business world, this MSc programme provides non-business school graduates with a solid foundation in international business theory and practice.

The MSc International Business degree is intended to enable students to:

  • engage in a study of organisations, their management and the changing international external environment in which they operate
  • prepare for and to develop a career in international business and management
  • examine and assess different aspects of the international business environment
  • have cross-disciplinary insights into the operation of international business
  • have a structured programme that allows students to focus upon advanced developments in international business management to meet their specific interests and career aspirations
  • be capable of a critical evaluation of the core business disciplines
  • enhance lifelong learning skills and personal development to contribute to society at large.

Applicants for this MSc can have a first degree of any discipline; however, the course is not designed for candidates with a first degree in Business.

Career options for this degree

This degree offers career opportunities in a variety of careers such as Accountancy, Consultancy, Business Development, Human Resources, IT, Logistics, Marketing, Private Banking, Project Management, Market Research and Sales and Distribution.

Programme Outline

The MSc in International Business is either a full-time degree studied over a period of a calendar year commencing late September or a part-time degree that can be studied over a period of between 2 and 4 years. In each case participants take taught modules and prepare a dissertation. Students without the relevant English proficiency are required to do a Summer pre-sessional programme before gaining entry onto the postgraduate programme.

Classes are in the form of two or three hour teaching/learning sessions that include some small group teaching and study.

The structure is modular, with individual modules each having a weighting of 15 credits. One credit represents 10 hours of student work, meaning that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study. This includes formal teaching, independent study, revision, and the preparation of assessments. The MSc degree requires the successful completion of 180 credits, 120 of which are taught modules, and 60 an international management dissertation.

All students undertake core modules relating to international business. The remaining modules offer a choice of electives. These allow the student to focus upon the modules with an international emphasis that is most closely associated with his/her career aspirations.

More information is available on key facts about the delivery of the programme.

A student's experience of this course

I will never forget the experience of studying at The University of Nottingham, Ningbo Campus. The time is never gone with my whole life because I have a lot of precious memories of the two years I spent at UNNC. I have grown up and experienced much happiness and stress along with challenges and success. When I first saw the beautiful campus I began to love it. I enjoyed studying in an environment that is free and open. My tutors encouraged me to open my mind to the development of the whole world and look at things with an international focus. Thinking about the study life at UNNC, I learned a lot and improved my knowledge and English skills. Moreover, I started to think critically and learn by myself. I understand how to communicate with people efficiently, how to work with teams, and how to get a win-win situation. It is a wealth of skills and qualities which I can use my whole life.
