Zhang Qian

Growing with UNNC

Zhang Qian, who studied both BA International Studies and MA International Relations and World History at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), credits the University for making him who is today.

As one of the first generations of UNNC students, Qian – perhaps better known by his English name Napoleon – spent the majority of his 20s on the campus. In his words, not only did he witness the growth of UNNC but also grew with it.

“My life and education at UNNC makes me who I am now,” he says.

Since graduating, Napoleon has used the experiences he gained at UNNC to pursue his dream of becoming a university professor and inspiring his students the way his UNNC teachers inspired him. He is currently studying for a PhD in international history at McGill University in Canada, a position he claims he wouldn’t have achieved without the support of his UNNC tutors, who helped him through the long, and at times difficult, PhD application process.

Having already been at McGill for more than a year, during which time he has read 200 books, become the first in his class to pass the PhD candidacy examinations, and received a new scholarship for his good academic performance, Napoleon feels he’s come a long way since leaving UNNC.

But he says: “Without the tutors at UNNC who either gave me direction when I was lost, encouraged me when I was confused and distressed, or lifted me when I wanted to fly higher, I couldn’t have come this this far.”
