Research Areas - Ph.D Programme


Course outline

The PhD programme offers flexible supervision between the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China and the University of Nottingham (UK). Students will be registered at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, and graduates will be awarded a University of Nottingham (UK) degree, which is also recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Depending on the proposed area of research, students may be required to spend part of their studies at the University of Nottingham (UK).

The following is a list of research areas currently active within the division. Applicants with interests in other areas are encouraged to discuss their proposals with the Head of Division.

*Critical and Cultural Theory

*Literature and Literary Arts (including the interrelationships between literature, music and film)

*Visual Culture (contemporary visual arts including film, photography, architecture and fine art; alternative visual media such as wall murals, political posters, flags and parades; rituals of display) 

*Creative Industries 

*Urban Spaces (including cities and regional change in China)

*Cultural Production and Globalisation

*Media (content, audience reception and production of television, newspapers, etc.)

*New Media (digital media technologies including the internet, mobile phones; social media/social networking, blogging, BBS forums, search engines, etc.)

*Film Studies (transnational cinema, film analysis and criticism, film theory, Latin American film, Nordic and European cinema)

*Journalism and Society (news, public sphere, conflict reporting, alternative printed media) 

*Surveillance Society 

*Border Studies and Diaspora Studies

*Post-Conflict Cultures

*Experimental Research Methodologies 

*Body Image

*Masculinity

*Aesthetics
