Description:
The Division of English at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China operates in collaboration with its home school from Nottingham, the School of English, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of English in the UK. The Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics (CRAL) brings together research across both the Division and the Home School, allowing interdisciplinary work of the highest standard. CRAL offers an unrivalled research environment which encourages a unique synergy between the context of our location in China and research practice in English.
Applicants must have a Masters degree in a relevant field.
Applications must be prepared according to the following guidelines or will not be considered. Your application should be emailed as one PDF document that includes the following information:
Curriculum vitae.
Include:
- Relevant work and educational background.
- Details about your completed or expected Masters degree, including supervisors, date of completion, title of thesis and a brief description of your topic, and any grades you received for relevant coursework.
- Details about your technical skillset, for example, this may include statistics, experimental design/methods, neuroimaging, corpus methods, fieldwork, etc.
Personal statement of interest. No more than half a page. Include:
- Highlights of your background and career aspirations.
- Reasons for special interest in the Division/School of English and CRAL.
Tentative research proposal. No more than one page. Include:
- A sketch of your proposed PhD research project that gives a basic overview of your proposed research and the methods you hope to employ.
Note, the details of the final research project would be decided upon in consultation with supervisors - here we would like to see how well you can frame a research question and test a hypothesis.
References. Provide:
- Names, titles and email contact details of two academic referees.
Proof of English-language proficiency if not a native English speaker.
Provide:
- Electronic copy/scan of TOEFL/Cambridge/IELTS certificate. This may be submitted after the main application deadline if necessary.
